Modest Standards

Jeremiah 17:9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”

Romans 7:25 “I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.”

Romans 12:2 “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

1 Corinthians 6:12 “All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.”

1 Corinthians 6: 19-20 “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

2 Corinthians 6:17 “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.”

Scripture tells us that we cannot trust our heart. We have to serve Christ with our mind; which needs to be renewed through the Word. We ought not to conform to this world. We have the free will to do anything but not everything is good for us. We have to honor God with our bodies because it is the temple of the Holy Ghost. God called us to come out from among the world and be separated.  Our identity should not be mistaken for that of this world whether it be spiritually or physically.

Modest by definition:

  • Having or showing a moderate or humble estimate of one’s merit, importance
  • Free from vanity, egotism, boastfulness
  • Free from showy extravagance
  • Decencies of behavior, speech, dress
  • Moderate in amount and extent
  • Discreet, humble, lowly, meek, nice, moderate, temperate, temperate, prudent

Modesty by definition:

  • The quality of being modest
  • Freedom from vanity and boastfulness
  • Simplicity and moderation
  • Regard for decency of behavior, speech, dress
  • Humility, decency, constraint, humbleness, discreetness, virtue

Opposite of modesty:

  • Arrogance, ego, pride, self-confidence, conceit

Modest is from the Greek language KOSMIOS (KOS’-MEE-OS). It means “well arranged, seemly, and modest”. In its primary sense, it means “orderly” i.e. of good behavior, modest. The term has two usages: modest and of good behavior.

In Acts 5:29, 38, 39 we see that we have to obey God rather than men. Anything that is of men will come to nothing. When it is ofGod, not only will it grow and multiply, it will last eternally. If we are against the things of God we’re against God. However, through the media, tv programming, fashion and trends cultures tells us and encourage us to do otherwise. We allow our traditions to determine what we feel is right and appropriate. We failed to realize Satan is the god of this world. His army of demons examine us to determine our weaknesses so they can custom design our temptations to fit the wants of our heart. Our flesh is served with sin.

1 Timothy 2:9-10 “In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.”

1 Peter 3:3-4 “Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.”

Matthew 5:28 “But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.”

Deuteronomy 22:5 “The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the Lord thy God.”

Genesis 1:27 “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.”

1 John 2:16 “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”

Mark 7:13 “Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.”

1 Corinthians 10:31 “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.”

Scripture tells us to dress in modest apparel. Our adornment should flow from within, a meek and quiet spirit. It also tells us to refrain from wearing clothing that for a man or has to do with a man. Our sex, as God created us male and female, ought to be distinguishable through apparel. Otherwise, it defiles the image ofGod. It is to prevent evil and impurity. Skirts and dresses are apparel that can quite often be worn immodestly. However, it is not apparel “which pertaineth unto a man.” This world, its culture, and tradition tell us otherwise. It is an attempted to make the Word of God of none effect to satisfy the lust of our eyes, flesh, and pride of life. History changes and almost always repeat itself so does the culture. We ought not to conform but do everything unto God and for his Glory.

  1. Thank you so much for this. I want to encourage you. As I was scrolling down, my 4 year old looked at your pictures and said, “Oh she’s Apostolic.” I asked her why she thought you were Apostolic and she specifically mentioned that you were beautiful and modest! She said you were beautiful just the way you are. I appreciate your stance on modesty and more than that you living it…for future generations.

    1. Awww! Thank you so much for sharing this with me. It’s more encouraging than hearing an adult appreciate modesty. My heart goes out to little girls as the world is set to make them feel less than what God made them. You guys did a great job training her up to recognize God’s standard of beauty is the best.
